Our Story
From 17th-century coaching inn to award-winning gastropub in the heart of Exmoor National Park
A Coaching Inn Since 1645
The Stag & Hound has stood at the heart of Exford since 1645, originally serving as a coaching inn for travellers crossing the wild moors of Exmoor.
For nearly four centuries, weary travellers have found refuge within our stone walls. The building retains its 17th-century character with flagstone floors, oak beams, and inglenook fireplaces that have warmed countless souls over the generations.
What began as a simple stopping point for coaches has evolved into one of Exmoor's most beloved gastropubs, yet we've never forgotten our roots as a welcoming haven for those exploring this magnificent landscape.
Meet James & Sarah
Current owners James and Sarah took over The Stag & Hound in 2019 with a simple mission: serve honest, exceptional food using the best ingredients Exmoor and the West Country have to offer.
Both passionate about supporting local producers and celebrating the incredible larder that surrounds us, they've transformed the pub into an award-winning gastropub whilst maintaining its authentic character and warm welcome.
"We fell in love with this place the moment we walked through the door," says Sarah. "The history, the location, the community — we knew we wanted to be part of preserving this special place for future generations."
James adds: "Our vision was simple — create a place where locals and visitors alike feel genuinely welcome, whether they're popping in for a pint or celebrating a special occasion."
Our Head Chef Tom
Head chef Tom trained under Nathan Outlaw and brings a refined but unpretentious style to every plate that leaves our kitchen.
Tom's philosophy is simple: let exceptional ingredients speak for themselves. Working closely with local farmers, fishermen, and producers across Exmoor and the West Country, he creates dishes that celebrate the seasons and showcase the incredible produce on our doorstep.
"Cooking here is a privilege," Tom explains. "When you have access to Exmoor venison, fresh fish from Brixham, and vegetables grown just miles away, the food almost cooks itself. My job is simply to treat these ingredients with the respect they deserve."
From our famous slow-braised Exmoor venison to the daily specials that change with the seasons, every dish reflects Tom's commitment to quality and his deep respect for local traditions.
